‘Predators’is a return to the franchise that made Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger famous in the 1980’s. In 2004 the monster aliens reared their ugly heads in the ridiculous ÁVP:Alien vs Predator’, but ‘Predators’returns the franchise to it’s former glory.
A group of assorted mercenaries, convicts, killers, Japanese mafia and one hapless doctor find themselves stranded on a mysterious planet. Initially it seems there is no connection between them all. Soon they discover their assorted combat, and general nastiness skills, are going to be used against them as they become a challenge for the planets inhabitants.
In a classic example of the ‘hunters becoming the hunted story’, ’Predators’ does a fine job of creating an action packed romp with a good dose of sci-fi thrown in for good measure.
Director Nimrod Antal could have easily let the special effects and action sequences of the film do their thing and forgot about everything else. However, he has done a fine job of creating a super tense atmosphere and characters we are truly interested in learning more about.
‘Predators’is certainly not a film for everyone. But if you love films a little on the B-Grade side, with plenty of gory action and silly dialogue, it is pretty hard to beat Predators’ this weekend.
