Inception
Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Cillian Murphy, Ellen Page, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Tom Hardy.
Dom Cobb works in the art of extracting thoughts from dreams. When he is offered a job to plant an idea, instead of extracting one, he must assemble a team up to the difficult task. If he is successful he will be reunited with his young family – if he fails the consequences are eternal.
‘Inception’ is the latest creation from Christopher Nolan of ‘Batman Begins’ and ‘The Dark Knight’ fame. After changing the way we look at comic book films forever Nolan has now created what can only be described as a unique masterpiece.
There is no question that the film has some super difficult themes to wrap your head around. However, despite plenty of head scratching ‘Inception’ remains a totally engrossing action thriller – the type of film that comes along once every decade.
The performances from all involved helps to make the films themes seem tangible. Leonardo DiCaprio proves that he does not need to be under the direction of Martin Scorsese to be brilliant. Ellen Page is perfectly cast as the tiny but worldly architect of dreamscapes. Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Tom Hardy are fantastic actors and their relatively small profile makes them inspired choices. Nolan regulars Cillian Murphy and Michael Caine are solid in smaller parts.
Marion Cotillard is great as Cobb’s wife, but the two character’s scenes together tend to be the most confusing and unnecessary. This plot line could be seen as an integral part of the overall story arc. However, with so much else going on Nolan could have been excused for concentrating instead on the action sequences which are breathtaking.
‘Inception’ is a little bit like the ‘Matrix’ franchise, a little like the ‘Bond’ franchise, but manages to be a truly unique experience nevertheless. Go in with a very open mind and be prepared for the best film of the year thus far.
