Amber vs Sir Richard Branson Posted by Breakfast 22 May, 2009 - 10:38 AM

Last week all hell broke loose after Sir Richard Branson got 'tail' wind of our Amber's column on page 17 of The Advertiser where she ripped into him for being sexist with his advertising campaigns.  She reckons it's unnecessary to use bikini clad girls to launch and product, but Sir Richard says 'sex sells' always has, always will.  The fight broke out when Sir Richard responded to her column in today's Advertiser.  Check out what he said, and check out Amber's latest retort!

Richard's Reply

"The problem, I believe, with her argument is that if the next time I promote a product I line up with three male models the photo won't get into your paper and the new business won't get talked about," he wrote to The Advertiser.

"The old-fashioned way of promoting products and businesses has worked for centuries and picture editors are unlikely to let it die out soon."

Amber's latest reply...

Hey Richard,

Thanks heaps for your message in the Tiser, although a text would have been fine! I love that we're now penpals, and you're not even in jail as my others are.  I look forward to meeting you in person and having a cup of tea on the top of a hot air balloon as you did a few years ago for your tv show.  Actually, I'd never have the guts to do that.  Now that we're BFF's I am hoping that next time I fly with Virgin, as I usually do, that I will be put up the pointy end of the plane, closer to the cock pit, if you know what I mean? Dick? Are you there?  LOL. p.s I have no problem with older men, but younger girls, out the emergency exit.  LOL.

Love ya.  Write Back soon. Amber (hope I haven't overused LOL......LOL, woops there I go again)

Actually, I think his comments are quite intelligent. Sorry Amber, but your reply is childish. Yes, I know, you won't publish this...

I say go Richard, just because some bitter and jealous so called media icon wants to snipe at more attractive women... well I think enough is said. Go richard for coming back with a smart response. And well done to you for giving him free advertising - I think Richard has won, once again!

Your reply was funny Amber but it's a shame you didn't make the point that half of his customers are female and might appreciate the male models!

I do have to make one other point on this.. As much as Sir Richard uses women in his adds and does things most guys would love to do. He does have a very feminine quality about him. Using male models for his adds might entice some publicity seeking reporters (not that we know any at all) to make up stories that he's secretly gay or bi....

Sorry Amber, but while I can see that your reply was intended to be a witty barb in return to his initial response, it seems to have a level of maturity of a teenage girl holding up her hand indignantly and spitting "wuht-evar!" I also seem to remember Amber shedding her clothes not long ago in an attempt to show that you don't need to be a certain size to be beautiful. If her campaign was really about that cause... couldn't it be proven by showing women who are well dressed, using clothes to accentuate their most proud assets? Why the nudity? Because sex sells? Can't women feel beautiful and confident without disrobing? Or was it to simply create a spectacle, similar to what Branson does?
