Should Marley Be Desexed? Posted by Breakfast 21 October, 2009 - 2:46 PM

Cosi has some concerns about Amber and her little dog Marley’s right to his...uhhhmm...doggy parts. Amber would like to get him desexed but Cosi doesn't agree.

There are so many of these little dogs in the pounds with matted fur who have been bought as cute little puppies and grown into dogs that have been neglected. Marley does not need to contribute to these pound dogs. Pet shop pups are often bred in terrible conditions on puppy farms and people should seek registered breeders and meet the parents etc etc...

Even if it was done unknowingly, you have already supported backyard breeders and puppy mills (see http://www.wheredopuppiescomefrom.com/) by purchasing your dog from a pet store and promoted the cross-breeding of dogs, which often results in problems with the dog's health and temperament. Please don't continue this trend by following Cosi's advice to keep your dog entire and breed from him. All dog owners have a responsibility to desex their pets and help reduce the number of litters being born. There are already far too many unwanted, healthy dogs getting euthanased because there aren't enough homes for them. Please use your show to educate your listeners about why desexing pets is so important and encourage them to look to animal shelters or registered breeders for their dogs, rather than continuing the cycle of supporting backyard breeders and puppy mills.

please remove this poll. Go down the rspca or animal welfare league to see all the unwanted animals that foolish others bred. Find out how many are put to sleep. maybe talk about that on your radio show as it would be much more productive. i pray that the dog gets neutured or we just have another dog owner who isnt responsible enough to own a dog. Imagine if we all let our dogs have pups! Buying a purebred dog from an ethical breeder would have also been a smart move. SO SAD :(

Of course Marley should be desexed - as a cross breed he will not be in any way adding to the quality of any breed - there are vast numbers of small white fluffies in punds and rescues and absolutely no valid reason to add to these. To humanise dogs by saying it is cruel to desex him and deny him his right to fatherhood is simply a statement made by someone who is ill informed about dogs - thay have a much simpler view of life and live day by day.Taking into account Marleys health - desexing will, as far as I know, lessen his risk of testicular cancer. So Amber - you do the right thing and desex your dog and Cosi - I would advise you to get out there and visit some rescue sheters - talk to some of the people who work tirelessly to help dogs that are generally the result of 'accidental' or 'unplanned' matings and THEN perhaps you will be more informed and aware - and a hell of a lot sadder. :(

I cannot believe that anyone would advocate not desexing an animal in this day and age when we constantly hear about how thousands and thousands of animals (including puppies) are put down each year in SA alone! From the RSPCA website says -

The RSPCA is bombarded with litters of unwanted kittens and puppies annually. Unfortunately, this means that we are forced to put down over 5,000 animals a year, many of these as a direct result of unwanted litters from irresponsible breeding. While we try our hardest to rehome all the animals that come into our shelter, we don't always have the resources to do so. It is heartbreaking for Staff to have to euthanise these animals just because there are people out there who are too irresponsible to realise the importance of desexing pets.

The RSPCA supports the desexing of all cats and dogs (registered breeders exempt). As responsible pet owners, this minor operation can help to reduce the numbers of unwanted kittens and puppies.

There are many benefits to desexing pets including:

    they live longer, healthier lives
they are less likely to suffer from anti-social behaviour, such as spraying and fighting
Cats are less likely to wander or run away, which reduces the risk of being run over by cars and being attacked by dogs
Desexing also reduces the incidence of health problems such as uterine, ovarian and breast cancer in females and prostate and testicular cancer in males.

Please do not contribute to the ever increasing problem of unwanted kittens and puppies. Do not allow your cat to breed. Make sure that your pet is desexed.

I am absolutely disgusted this is even up for discussion.

Have you any idea the genetic testing done by REGISTERED breeders to ensure their dogs are sound and healthy?

Have you any idea how many "just one litter" puppies end up in pounds?

Mutts should not be bred from!!! Leave it to the responsible registered breeders, do not contribute to the mixed breed overpopulation and become BYB (backyard breeders). There are plenty of fluffy white mutts already at the pound.
This is where they should be from, not petshop puppy mills or BYB's.

What tests have been done on Marley, or will be done on the mother dog? What happens if emergency vet care is need, $1000 c-section? What if mum rejects the pups and hand rearing is required round the clock?

I am changing my radio station both at home and work due to this ridiculous situation. I am just sickened that poor Marley is being used in this fashion.

    No!!
How dare you, if you wanted a female puppy go exchange the poor dog. Don't do want you are considering, it's wrong. Think about would you like it if someone took your womenhood away? (In Marley's case manhood)

Please don't add to the overpopulation of dogs just for the sake of it. Go and visit the hundreds of shelter websites and see just how many dogs looking for homes there are. Talk to the people that work there and get them to tell you about how many they have to kill every week. Not only is it irresponsible to have a litter of puppies just for the hell of it, desexed dogs are also happier and healthier in the long term.

I recently adopted a stunning cat from the RSPCA here in Adelaide and was disgusted at the amount of cats and kittens there because their previous owners also believed desexing was unnecessary. What’s unnecessary is undesexed pets giving birth to litters of kittens/puppies who get given away also undesexed so that they can continue on the overpopulation. There are simply too many healthy cats/kittens and dogs/puppies getting euthanized because there aren't enough good homes for them. Please use your show to educate your listeners about why desexing pets is so important and encourage them to look to animal shelters or registered breeders for their dogs, rather than continuing the cycle of supporting backyard breeders and puppy mills via pet shops (see http://www.wheredopuppiescomefrom.com).

Please consider going to a shelter and having a look at all the unwanted puppies and kittens before decided to bring yet another unwanted litter into the world. Millions of dogs are euthanised each year because there are not enough homes for all the unwanted animals. It is a complete myth that animals should be allowed 'one litter' and in fact it is better for their health (and for your sanity) that they are de-sexed as early as possible to prevent certain cancers and to stop undesirable behaviour like spraying urine. Please keep Marley as a gorgeous pet and have him desexed.
